After-the-party cleaning checklist for homes in San Antonio

The guests are gone, the leftovers are in containers, and the house looks like a party happened. That is a good sign. Cleanup, though, goes faster when you do it in a set order instead of wandering from room to room.

Direct answer: clear and sort first (trash, dishes, leftovers), then deal with soft items (linens, towels, spills on fabric), then bathrooms, then floors last. Save the detail work, like the oven, grout, and baseboards, for a second day.

This checklist works after Thanksgiving, a holiday party, or any weekend with a full house. If you are also preparing for hosting, see our Thanksgiving kitchen checklist.

The order that saves time

Order Job Why this order
1 Trash, recycling, and leftovers Clears the surfaces you need to reach
2 Dishes and the kitchen The biggest mess, and food left out gets harder to clean
3 Linens, towels, and soft items Gets laundry running while you do the rest
4 Spills and spots on fabric or carpet Faster is better, before a stain sets
5 Bathrooms Used the most by guests
6 Living and dining areas Surfaces, then furniture, then floors
7 Floors Last, so you do not walk over a clean floor twice

1. Trash, recycling, and leftovers

  • Take out all full bags, and replace the liners.
  • Put leftovers in containers and into the fridge, and label them.
  • Gather the cups, glasses, and plates from every room, not just the kitchen. Check the porch, the bathrooms, and the guest room.

2. Dishes and the kitchen

  • Start the dishwasher, and hand-wash what does not fit (roasting pans, large serving dishes). Soak anything baked on.
  • Wipe the counters, the stovetop, and the sink.
  • Wipe down the fridge handle and the cabinet handles that guests touched.
  • Check the floor around the stove and the sink for drips.

3. Linens and soft items

  • Strip guest beds if anyone stayed over, and start a load of sheets and towels.
  • Collect hand towels and dish towels from every room.
  • Check couch cushions and chair seats for crumbs, and vacuum the seams.

4. Spills and spots on fabric or carpet

Treat spots as soon as you can, because they are easier to deal with before they dry.

  • Blot, do not rub. Rubbing can push the spill deeper.
  • Check the care tag of the fabric and the product label before using any cleaner, and test in a hidden spot first.
  • Red wine, grease, wax, and candle residue are the most common trouble spots. If it is a valuable rug or upholstery, ask a specialist before you try something harsh.

We cannot promise that a stain will come out, and neither can anyone who has not seen the fabric. If you are not sure, take a photo and ask. (We use the same approach in our Halloween cleanup guide.)

5. Bathrooms

  • Clean the toilet, sink, and mirror, and wipe the counter and the faucet.
  • Replace towels and empty the trash.
  • Check the floor around the toilet, and wipe the door handle and light switch.

6. Living and dining areas

  • Wipe tables and counters, and put furniture back where it belongs.
  • Dust the surfaces you can reach, and wipe down the doorknobs and the light switches near the entry.
  • Check the entry for tracked-in dirt.

7. Floors (last)

Vacuum first, then mop hard floors. Pay attention to under the dining table and around the kitchen, where food drops.

The second-day list

These are the things that rarely get done during the first pass:

  • Inside of the oven and the microwave
  • Inside of the fridge, once the leftovers are sorted
  • Baseboards and door frames
  • Window sills and tracks
  • Grout in the kitchen and bathrooms

If you want help

If the weekend wore you out, a post-holiday clean is a reasonable thing to hand off. We scope it in writing first, tell you what is included, and quote anything unusual (heavy spills on fabric, for example) separately after seeing a photo.

If you host guests in a short-term rental, this is also a turnover with a deadline. Our STR cleaning service is built for that.

Need a hand after the holiday? Request a quote for a post-party clean, and we will tell you what is realistic before the visit.
