They overlap a lot, and that is why people mix them up. But they are not the same, and booking the wrong one is a common way to end up with a surprise.
Direct answer: a move-out clean is usually a deep clean of an empty home, with extra attention to the places a landlord or buyer will inspect: the inside of the oven, fridge, and cabinets, closets, bathrooms, baseboards, and floors. A deep clean in an occupied home focuses on accumulated buildup, and it does not always include the inside of appliances or cabinets.
Neither term is standardized, so the written scope matters more than the name.
Side by side
| Deep clean | Move-out clean | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Occupied home, to reset or establish a baseline | Empty home, at the end of a lease or before a sale |
| Furniture | Present, so some areas are not reachable | Gone, so closets, cabinets, and floors are fully accessible |
| Focus | Accumulated grime and less-frequent tasks | What a landlord, buyer, or inspector will check |
| Appliance interiors | Often an add-on | Nearly universal |
| Cabinets and drawers | Often an add-on | Nearly universal |
| Closets | Sometimes | Usually |
| Behind and under appliances | Differentiator or add-on | Differentiator or add-on (appliances may need to be moved) |
| Carpet shampooing | Add-on | Add-on, sometimes required by the lease |
| Who defines "done" | You and the cleaner | Often the landlord or your lease |
Which one do you need?
- You are still living there, and the home needs a reset: a deep clean.
- You are leaving a rental and want your deposit back: a move-out clean, matched to your lease and your landlord's checklist.
- You are selling: a move-out or listing-prep clean, depending on timing and who has access to the home.
- You are moving into a new place: a move-in clean, before the furniture arrives. We will cover that in a separate guide.
- There was construction: post-construction cleaning is a separate, specialty scope.
What to ask either way
Whichever you book, ask for the scope in writing and confirm these:
- Is the inside of the oven, fridge, and cabinets included?
- Are windows, tracks, and blinds included? Which ones?
- Do you clean behind the stove and fridge?
- Is carpet cleaning included or separate?
- What is excluded?
Our full deep cleaning checklist lists every item and where it usually falls. For the move-out version, see our move-out checklist for Texas renters. And for how a regular clean differs from a deep clean, see our deep clean vs. regular clean guide.
Not sure which one you need? Tell us your situation and we will recommend a scope in writing, including what is an add-on.
